Lighthouses is a fund designed to help support recreational, educational and pro-social programs after hours for young Manitobans, launched by Manitoba Justice. An initiative of Neighbourhoods Alive!, Lighthouses makes use of schools, recreation centres and other existing community facilities after hours for sports, arts, music and other activities identified and organized by local youth and community stakeholders.
It is a community-based crime prevention program designed to develop partnerships among youth, police, Justice personnel and the community in order to promote opportunities for youth to get involved in pro-social, recreational, and crime prevention activities.
Programs like Lighthouses can have tremendous benefits for participants. Statistics Canada's National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth Series recently concluded that children who participate in organized activities outside of school tend to have higher self-esteem, interact better with friends and perform somewhat better in school.
Lighthouses offer youth positive environments and will operate in many communities throughout Manitoba. Activities usually take place at least once a week.
Lighthouses is designed to:
57 have been approved for funding in the 8th year of the program (2008-2009).
While each Lighthouses program has the ability to offer different activities, the projects must meet specific criteria as well. Preference is given to proposals which show collaboration between multiple agencies and interest groups.
Provincial funding strengthens the ability of communities to create and manage their own unique Lighthouses programs and is a key part of Manitoba's strategy for safer communities.
The provincial funding contribution, which is up to $1,000 per month, can cover as much as half of the total cost of running a program. The other portion must come from alternate sources, which can include services in-kind, from the host location and its partners.
Youth in the province's Lighthouses programs help shape what will take place at each location on any given night. There is no shortage of great ideas, some of which are listed here.
