24    HERALDRY, FLAGS, CROWNS, CROSSES, ARROWS AND SYMBOLS
24.01    Shields, crests
Specific Guideline 1:    Shields or crests can vary from quite simple to extremely ornate designs. While they are often surrounded by or contain crowns, armor and/or heraldic animals, they may merely suggest a shield or crest because of the overall shape of the design.

Specific Guideline 2:    When the overall shape of a shield is also in the shape of a recognizable geometric design, see also the appropriate section of Category 26.

Specific Guideline:    Three-pronged scepters or spears are in 24.03.04. Tridents are not in 14.07.02 (Pitchforks). Tridents are normally distinguished from pitchforks by their barbed prongs or are clearly suggested by the text of the mark.

24.03.25    Other emblems and insignia

24.05    Seals

24.05.01    Circular or elliptical seals
Note:    Seals generally consist of concentric circles or ovals with words, letters or numbers between the concentric circles or ovals. When the text of the mark clearly indicates that the design is a seal, circular or elliptical seals are not cross-referenced in Category 26. When the shape of the seal engenders a commercial impression separate and apart from that of the seal, the circular or elliptical seal should be cross-referenced in Category 26. For example, a decorative or irregular shaped border or circumference or letters comprising a circle should be cross-referenced. Shading, concentric circles and letters forming the perimeter of a circle should not be cross-referenced

24.05.02    Seals having some other shape

Specific Guideline:    Seals in this section should be cross-referenced in Category 26 or in another appropriate Category.

24.07    Coins, medals

24.07.01    Coins
Specific Guideline:    Cross-reference medals not suspended from ribbons or pins with 24.07.01 and 24.07.04.

Specific Guideline 1:    A medal will often hang below a ribbon or pin. Medals which are not suspended below a ribbon or pin are cross-referenced with 24.07.01 (See examples in 24.07.01 (A)).

24.07.07    Prize ribbons
Specific Guideline:    Prize ribbons are often strips of ribbon which hang below a button or a badge. However, if otherwise indicated, this code is appropriate even if a badge or button is absent.

24.09    Flags, banners
Specific Guideline 1:    Flags are generally characterized by flagpoles or furls.

Specific Guideline 2:    Flag designs are in every applicable section of Division
24.09.

24.09.01    Rectangular or square flags excluding American flag or checkered flag

24.09.02    Pennants (flags in the form of a triangle), flags with forked sides
Specific Guideline:    Flags with forked sides are similar to banners (24.09.07).

24.09.05    American flags in any form
Specific Guideline:    This section includes the stars and stripes design of the American flag in any form. Designs in this section are not limited to flags.

24.09.07    Banners
Specific Guideline:    A banner is a representation of a strip of fabric often displaying a device or legend. Designs containing more than one banner are not cross-coded with 24.09.09.

Note:    Many banner designs are cross-referenced with Division 26.13 (Quadrilaterals).

24.11    Crowns
Excluding:    Crowns of leaves, flowers or fruits (05.15.01).

Specific Guideline:    If a crown is a small inconspicuous design element functioning as punctuation or as a part of a letter, the crown should be coded in 29.01.07.

24.15    Arrows
24.15.01    Arrows forming a circle or an arc of a circle
Specific Guideline:    Arrow(s) that form or comprise a circle are in 24.15.01. If the circle is made up of more that one arrow then also code 24.15.10. If arrow(s) is forming or bordering the perimeter of a circle, add code 26.01.09. If the arrow(s) is comprising a circle, add code 26.01.11.

24.15.02    Arrows forming any other geometric figure
Specific Guideline:    Arrow(s) which form a geometric figure other that a circle are in 24.15.02. If there is more than one arrow in the design then also code 24.15.10; also code the appropriate section for the geometric design in Category 26.
