Washington D.C. Today, Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) voted to pass, by a margin of 376-29, "H.R. 6532: Highway Trust Fund Reauthorization Act," which prevented an estimated 34 percent reduction in federal highway investment in Maryland. By reallocating over $8 billion dollars from the General Fund, the Congress ensured that nearly 380,000 jobs across the country would be saved, including over 6,600 in the state of Maryland. "We cannot afford to stand by and allow for more crippling job losses when our economy is teetering on a recession," said Edwards. "We owe it to workers and their families to fight for these jobs and prevent what could have been a devastating reduction in federal highway investment. By passing this legislation we have made sure that another crippling blow will not be dealt to our economy while continuing federal investment in the infrastructure that Maryland needs desperately, including a focus on expansion of our mass transportation capabilities." |
