When “locavore”—the word used to describe the practice of eating locally grown food—entered the Oxford American Dictionary in 2007, it defined the latest food trend. Coined by four women in San Francisco in 2005, “locavore” takes the concepts of eating and ecology to a new level.
Soils Limited in Storing Carbon and Mitigating Global Warming
Soils, long known to be potential natural "sinks" or storehouses for carbon, are limited in just how much carbon they can stash away, according to two recent studies by researchers at UC Davis; University of Kentucky; University of Bonn, Germany; and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
Rural counties explore technology in localized ag
The coastal and mountainous region encompassing Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity counties has joined the growing ranks of California communities exploring the possibilities of creating large-scale markets for small farms. In early spring, the region went live with a small-farm website.
