In June 2003, the Department of Agriculture (USDA) authorized OneCert to issue export certificates for organic products shipped to Japan. Export certificates are required under an export arrangement between USDA and the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries (MAFF). This authorization permits OneCert to issue export certificates for U.S. grown or handled organic plant products bound for Japan. By issuing the export certificate, OneCert will be attesting to the products compliance with the USDA's National Orgainc Program (NOP) standards and attesting to the non-use of three materials. The materials prohibited by the Japan export arrangement are alkali-extracted humic acid, lignin sulfonate, and potassium bicarbonate.
OneCert is now offering certification to European regulations (EU 2092/91) for products that will be sold in Europe. OneCert's application for ISO Guide 65 accreditation of our EU 2092/91 certification program is listed as "Under Review" on the USDA web site. That designation means that the USDA's Audit, Review, and Compliance Branch (ARC) is 95% confident that OneCert will be accredited when the process is complete. It is a long process and the USDA wants to review the certifications we are doing under the EU program. The USDA auditors expect OneCert to be certifying to the EU 2092/91 program now so that they have enough certification files to review.
OneCert was accredited by the US National Organic Program (NOP) on April 22, 2003. We expect to receive accreditation to ISO Guide 65 (for European certification) in time for the 2003 certification season. We have also made arrangements for verification to other standards needed in specific countries such as Japan and Switzerland.
The USDA will pay 75% of your certification costs up to $500 maximum. This assistance is available to all US farms and businesses certified under the NOP program.
