Welcome to the Baker Center!

In early 2003 the Howard Baker Center for Public Policy began operations at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The mission of the Baker Center is to develop programs and promote research to further the public's knowledge of our system of governance, and also to highlight the critical importance of public service.

Baker Center Leadership Transition

ollege of Law Professor Carl Pierce will serve as interim director of the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, beginning June 1. He replaces Alan Lowe, who left the Baker Center earlier this month to become director of the George W. Bush Presidential Library.

Carl has been at UT for 37 years and, in addition to his distinguished teaching career, has served in various administrative capacities. Carl has a bachelor's degree and law degree from Yale University. He has been teaching at the College of Law since 1972. He also has served the college as assistant dean from 1972 to 1974 and as director of the Clayton Center for Entrepreneurial Law from 1997 to 2000. Now the W. Allen Separk more>

Event - 5.29.2009: Clover Power! 4-H and Civic Engagement

In partnership with the state 4-H office, the Baker Center will welcome over 100 4-H members to the building to have a morning filled with opportunities for them to connect their work with 4-H and civic engagement.  Activities will include an interactive activity in the Baker Center museum, “The System Works,” speakers from 4-H, and hands-on sessions that allow students to learn about the policy process.
