Teachers on Teaching: Purdue Video Workshops on College Teaching

These workshops on college teaching were originally presented as part of Purdue University's Teachers on Teaching series. Presenters are Purdue faculty members who have been recognized as outstanding instructors and Purdue instructional development specialists. These tapes will be a valuable resource for any college's instructional development library. They can be used for self-study or as components in instructional development workshops.

A Winning Attitude: Setting The Stage For Teaching Success
Price: $185
Presenter: Prof. J. Michael Jacob
Professor Jacob presents three basic models of the teacher: as a Guardian of the Gates of Knowledge, as a Coach, and as a Wilderness Guide. Some teachers are able to inspire students, while others, equally knowledgeable and often harder working, are often frustrated and avoided by students. The educator's attitude is the catalyst that makes the educational reaction work.

Enhancing your Presentations with Media (Part 1: Presentation Skills; Part 2: Using Media Properly)
Price: $185
Presenters: Profs. James Russell and Carl Stafford
A good presenter is one who knows the content well and can present it dynamically. Without this combination of content and showmanship, the presentation will not be as effective as it could be. Speaking skills are necessary but not sufficient to ensure a good presentation. Research has shown that the appropriate use of media enhances the initial reaction to and retention of information presented. This two-part video program contains eight vignettes. The first part is a 30-minute vignette in which Carl and Jim discuss general presentation techniques. In the second part they present seven vignettes which demonstrate how to properly use seven types of media: videotapes, overhead transparencies, slides, flip charts, computer projection devices, chalkboards, and microphones.

Test Anxiety: Overcoming your Fear
Price: $185
Presenter: Prof. Clint Gabbard
In the educational process, testing is the traditional method instructors use to assess whether or not learning has occurred. Unfortunately, some students experience such severe ''stage fright'' when taking tests that they are unable to show their instructors what they know. They become so scared of the test that their minds go blank and they cannot perform. This videotape program is directed at two audiences: students (or anyone who needs to take tests) and instructors. Teachers will learn techniques for structuring their classes and their tests so as to reduce the amount of anxiety their students experience.

Role-Playing as a Teaching Alternative: Do I Dare? (closed captioned)
Price: $185
Presenters: Profs. Joan Kuipers and Diane Clemens
Role-play can make a class more enjoyable for both the students and the instructors while actually enhancing the educational experience. Role-play scenarios can demonstrate information presented in a class or text, simulating real-world situations to help students better understand the materials. Role-play scenarios can also break up the lecture routine, keeping students on their toes throughout the entire class period.

Handling Hordes: Teaching Mass Lectures
Price: $185
Presenter: Prof. Reece McGee
One of the most frequent complaints of undergraduate students about their education is the predominance of large classes. But on most campuses, large classes are a fact of life and will continue to be so. Professor McGee has learned the secrets of this instructional mode while teaching very large classes for over 20 years at Purdue University. This video program shows how conscientious instructors in mass classes can offer the best learning experience for students while maintaining their own sanity.

Using your Voice to Improve your Teaching
Price: $185
Presenters: Profs. Barbara Solomon and Richard Sullivan-Lee
Provides instructors at all levels with valuable and practical information about how they can develop better voice skills, preserve their voices, and become better instructors. Demonstrates common ways in which instructors abuse their voices; describes the characteristics of an effective speaking voice; explains how to achieve a successful voice through simple, step-by-step warm-up techniques; and presents tips to keep your voice healthy and strong.

A Lecture on Lecturing
Price: $185
Presenter: Prof. Carl Stafford
Lecturing can be an effective way to present course content to students. This presentation provides tips for structuring effective lectures, accommodating different student learning styles, involving students in the lecture, and preparing yourself to lecture. Workbook included.

Classroom Climate Workshop: Gender Equity
Price: $150
Presenters: Emily Wadsworth and Barbara Clark
The video program and facilitation guide provide portrayals of actual student experiences with gender equity in the classroom and discussion questions relating to the scenes. Used together, the video and guide can help instructors explore their own assumptions and behaviors, take immediate steps to become more gender equitable in the classroom, and become better instructors for all students.

Classroom Climate Workshop: Cultural Awareness
Price: $185
Presenters: Emily Wadsworth and Lisa Anderson
The videotape presents two dramas depicting cultural awareness in the classroom, and an exercise for workshop participants. The facilitation guide outlines a cultural awareness workshop, includes discussion questions, suggests actions steps for implementation in the classroom, and contains a list of reference materials.

Creating Cultural Awareness in College Classrooms
Price: (Print materials) 10 booklets for $25
Authors: Emily Wadsworth and Lisa Anderson
This facilitation guide describes an approach to raising awareness, expanding knowledge, and providing responses concerning cultural issues developed in the two Classroom Climate video presentations above. This booklet is a valuable resource that can make all educators, administrators, and students more attuned to issues of cultural awareness and provides them with effective ways to achieve educational equity in the classroom.
