Learn More About Distance Learning

Do I have the necessary computer skills?

If you currently use word processing software, can copy and paste material, e-mail an attached document, and search for information on the Internet, you have the skills necessary for participating in a distance learning course. While not all distance learning courses may require these skills, they will make communicating with the school and professor more timely and convenient.

What if I do not have the necessary computer skills?

Click here to learn with the help of the distance learning guide.

Sample Courses

If you have considered these questions and still are unsure if you are interested in distance learning, the Indiana College Network (ICN) site has sample syllabi, streaming video, and Internet classes, to give you the feel of actual courses. Go to the ICN site to preview sample distance education courses.

Drops / Withdraws and Refunds

A 100 percent refund may be granted when a course is dropped before the start date. Other refunds may be issued during weeks one and two (80 percent), three and four (60 percent), and five and six (40 percent) of a sixteen-week semester. Refunds are prorated for courses that meet on a schedule other than sixteen weeks. Refunds are not issued for drops after the sixth week.

Exams

Most distance learning courses require proctored exams and proctors must be approved in advance by Continuing Education Distance Learning Programs. For proctor guidelines and request forms, click here [PDF].

Grades

You will receive a grade from the registrar's office within 30 to 60 days of the end of the semester.
