Coldest day of the year and the wind chill will make it feel even colder

by Express-Times staff
Friday January 16, 2009, 6:56 AM

Temperatures are slowly creeping out of the single digits this morning, and it is expected to warm up to a brisk 17 degrees this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

But the wind chill will make it feel much closer to 0 degrees all day, so bundle up if you must go outside.

Some schools in the Allentown area and toward the Poconos are closed today. Check out all the closings and delays online.

Temperatures for this time of year typically hit the mid-30s. It is expected to warm up again on Sunday, with light snow and temperatures just about freezing.

Snow, freezing temperatures could mean slippery roads

by Express-Times staff
Thursday January 15, 2009, 7:26 AM

Snow is dusting the region this morning, and the temperature is hovering in the teens, although the wind gusts of up to 20 mph will make it feel even colder.

It will warm up to a brisk 20 degrees, with precipitation tapering off by early afternoon. Friday will be bitterly cold, with a high of only 14 degrees.

Roads could be slippery this morning, and the National Weather Service warns drivers to be cautious for ice.

Keep an eye on our list of school closings and delays for any updates.

Easton Area School District does weather alerts, delays, postponements and early dismissals very well

by Tony Rhodin for The Tony Rhodin Blog

When the wind whips, the snow falls and the temperatures drop to near zero -- or if the water turns cloudy and no one knows why -- the Easton Area School District makes the right decisions and then clearly communicates what parents and students must do. Impressive.
As much as I spend my days griping about administrative decisions at local school districts, there's something the Easton Area district does very well: warning parents about the weather.

You might see this as trivial, but with so many young, inexperienced drivers transporting themselves and others to Easton Area High School, administrators who put safety first and convenience much further down the totem pole are properly doing their jobs.

Even when school was canceled during the water dust-up, the district got it right. What if there were something really wrong with the water and it were sitting in a school's pipes, just waiting to poison some young kid? You err on the side of caution.

Frigid temperatures expected, shelter opens, Easton Area School District officials say children should dress warmly

by Express-Times staff
Wednesday January 14, 2009, 10:59 AM

Today's high of 23 degrees is only the start of extreme weather moving into the region this week.

Tomorrow, temperatures will only hit 20 degrees with intermittent snow showers, and on Friday, the high is expected to be a frigid 16 degrees, but the National Weather Service says the wind chill will make it feel much colder. This is 18 degrees colder than the average high for this time of year.

Easton Area School District officials are reminding parents to ensure children are dressed warmly, with hats, scarves and gloves, especially if they are walking to school or standing at bus stops.

Check lehighvalleylive.com for any school closings or delays.

Morning crashes on Interstate 80, minor wrecks across region as snow falls

by Tom Quigley
Saturday January 10, 2009, 2:56 PM

Police responded to a crash at Elizabeth Avenue and Sullivan Trail in Forks Township this afternoon.
There were at least two crashes on Interstate 80 this morning as motorists dealt with what could be the start of a major snowstorm today.

One crash occurred at about 10 o'clock on the westbound side of the interstate in Hardwick Township and resulted in several injuries, according to emergency radio reports.

Police have been responding to minor crashes on roads made slick by a coat of snow all day. There also have been several reports of pedestrians slipping on sidewalks and driveways.
