requested funds to pursue "break-out" research different from that
which is ongoing in their laboratories.
Financial Provisions: Maximum of US$450,000
total costs. Funds can be used for any research-based expenses,

Purpose : To support high-level basic science

The following grants are offered in all of these areas, unless otherwise noted. This listing does not include all Trust opportunities – due to the large number of Trust grants, only those most relevant to global health or those open to researchers around the world are included. Residents of the UK and the European Economic Area (EEA) or their potential collaborators are encouraged to visit the Trust website to view the full list of grants available. Candidates may not apply for more than one Wellcome Trust fellowship at any one time.
Purpose: To provide funding for high quality
projects in basic and clinical sciences relevant to human and
animal health.
Eligibility: Teams in the UK or Ireland, or
international collaborations involving researchers in the UK or
Ireland. Partnerships with developed country universities must be
primarily conducted in the UK and Ireland. Projects involving
developing country institutions are highly encouraged and may have
their “center of gravity” within the developing
world.
Financial Provisions: Between £150,000 and
£300,000 overall, including salaries for research assistants
and/or technicians, materials and consumables, the purchase and
maintenance of animals or equipment, and collaborative travel
(including meeting travel).
Duration: Three years.
Deadline: Open, at least six months in advance of
project commencement.
Purpose: To support outstanding UK and EEA
clinical researchers in conducting research in a developing
country
Eligibility: UK and EEA nationals and legal
residents with a Ph.D. or M.D., a strong publication record, and a
diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene or a commitment to
undertake one. All applications must be submitted through one of the
four Wellcome Trust Centres for Research in Clinical
Tropical Medicine (http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/Funding/Biomedical-science/Application-information/index.htm).
Financial Provisions: Salary, research costs
between £50,000 and £200,000 per year, a flexible
funding allowance, support to attend scientific meetings, and an
overseas allowance.
Duration: Five years, based primarily in a
developing tropical country, renewable once in a 50:50 cost sharing
scheme with host institution.
Deadline: Preliminary applications March 8 and
July 7 2006. Full applications, if invited, May 3 and September 1
2006.
Note:A special time-limited funding initiative, the Health Consequences of Population Change Programme (HCPCP) fellowships will run for
the last time in 2006.
Purpose: To support novel investigator-led
research in the area of population change and its impact on health.
Research can be carried out in any developing country or
restructuring country of Eastern Europe.
Eligibility: Principal applicants must hold an
established post in a university, medical school, or similar
research institution (or, in exception cases, non-governmental
organizations). Priority will be given to applicants from
developing countries who demonstrate a commitment to addressing
local health problems.
Financial Provisions: Full direct project costs.
Proposals may include some provision for research training of
investigators from less developed countries.
Duration: Up to three years for research projects
and five years for research programs.
Deadline: Open, but the full application (invited
after submission and approval of a preliminary application) must be
submitted at least six months before the next Science Funding
Committee meeting.

Purpose: For short-term visits by scholars
within their own country, or to another country, for the purposes
of collaborative research and networking. Visits under this scheme
might be to conduct a network meeting prior to a research grant
application, and to exchange views or work with colleagues who have
similar research interests. Study or lecture tours, meetings of a
professional or vocational nature, workshops, symposia and
international congresses are normally excluded.
Eligibility: Experienced researchers need not be
in academic life but will normally be expected to hold a doctorate
or clinical qualification. They will be expected to have an
established research interest in biomedical ethics (i.e. a
publication record in biomedical ethics), or to be actively
pursuing a research career in biomedical ethics.
Financial Provisions: £1000 towards
traveling expenses and, in some cases, subsistence expenses.
Deadline: Open, at least two months before
travel.
Purpose: To support the direct costs of a
research project concerning biomedical ethics in developing
countries.
Eligibility: Principal applicants should be based
in a developing country. Co-applicants may be based in a developing
country or in the UK or Republic of Ireland. Applicants must
normally hold an established academic post in a university or other
institution.
Financial Provisions: Salary and associated costs
for research assistants and other project support staff, travel
(including to conferences), and equipment.
Duration: Three years.
Deadline: March 1, August 1, December 1.
Preliminary applications should be submitted six weeks before these
deadlines.
Purpose: To meet the direct costs of a modest
research project related to biomedical ethics in developing
countries.
Eligibility: Principal applicants should be based
in a developing country. Co-applicants may be based in a developing
country or in the UK or Republic of Ireland. Applicants must
normally hold an established academic post in a university or other
institution.
Financial Provisions: Approximately £30,000
for salaries for assistants and support staff, travel, equipment,
and other essential expenses.
Duration: Six months to one year.

Purpose: To support seminars and similar
initiatives relevant to biomedical ethics in developing
countries.
Eligibility: Meetings that will bring together
workers from different disciplines and increase opportunities for
representation by developing countries.

Fields of Study: Basic research in neurobiology, i.e., invertebrate and vertebrate (excluding clinical) neurobiology, specifically investigations of neural mechanisms involved in sensory, motor, and other complex functions of the whole organism as these relate to behavior.
Purpose: To support established scientists in
conducting neurobiology research.
Eligibility: Established scientists of all ages
working at accredited institutions in the United States. Research
grants will not be awarded to investigators who have already
received, or expect to receive, substantial support from other
sources. The Foundation currently defines "substantial" as
approximately US$200,000 per year (excluding Principal
Investigator's salary). The principal investigator must hold no
less than the position of assistant professor, or the equivalent,
in order to apply.
Financial Provisions: Research grants normally
range from US$30,000 to US$75,000 per year.
Duration: Up to three years.

elucidating the dynamics of human resources in infectious disease
control programs; elucidating transaction costs in infectious
disease control programs; and understanding and addressing child
vulnerability and resilience, with a focus on infectious diseases
among children in conflict situations.
Eligibility: Each research team must include a
trained social scientist. PI should ideally be a national of a
