Frequently asked questions

We receive many questions about deseretnews.com. Listed below are answers to some of the most common.

How do I … ?

When do you update your content?

On weekdays, the current day's stories from the printed Deseret News are posted online generally by 9 a.m. with breaking news stories updated throughout the day. Saturday and Sunday editions are available online generally by 2 a.m. Each story's publication date is listed in the headline directory and at the top of each story.

Many of the features of deseretnews.com, like our preps scoreboard and the weather area, are continuously updated throughout the day and night.

Why do you use a sans-serif font for your text?

Well, we don't — at least it's not our first choice.

If you're seeing the stories appear in san-serif text, it's likely because your computer is missing the serif font that we do specify.

We (and many other Web sites) specify Microsoft's "core fonts for the Web" — Georgia, a serif font, for body text and Verdana, a sans-serif font, for headlines and other uses. These fonts were specifically designed for optimum legibility on computer monitors.

However, many people don't have Georgia installed on their computers. When this happens the computer substitutes Verdana, Helvetica or Arial (all sans-serif fonts) for the text in the stories. If you'd like to install Georgia, (or any other Microsoft Web font) it's available at no cost from Microsoft's core fonts for the Web.

These fonts are easy to download and install and are available for computers running the Mac OS and Windows operating systems.

Where do you get your content?

Most of the editorial content from the printed Deseret News is reproduced online. This includes stories written by the Deseret News staff and material obtained from various wire services. In addition, many features not found in the printed paper appear in the Web edition. A few syndicated features are available in the printed edition only. Display advertising and special printed supplements do not appear online.
