New York or Bust?

New York is considered the center of the media world, but it's far from the only city you can live in if you want to work in media. Knowing where you want to work, and the media opportunities that exist in those cities, is key to your job hunt.

Going From Online...to Print?

Wednesday January 14, 2009
I found this Wired.com story, about an entrepreneur who's looking to take blog posts and distribute them in a print supplement, pretty interesting. The entrepreneur is Joshua Karp and, through his company The Printed Blog, he's going to launch a twice-daily print newsletter featuring a catch-all of blog posts from across the Web.

Permissions to use the content could get tricky but Karp's hope, as the Wired.com story notes, is that, once that issue is dealt with, the print editions, which will be dispersed in a handful of cities, will attract ads from local businesses. It's of course an old model -- the print newspaper model, which relies on ad money for classifieds from local advertisers -- featuring new content.

Whether Karp, or any of the bloggers, will make money off this experiment remains to be seen, but it is an interesting twist on the current model of simply sending print content online.

The Digital Revolution at the 'Times'

Monday January 12, 2009
Amid the growing buzz about the death of print, particularly the death of the newspaper, one of the biggest stories has been about the struggles facing the New York Times. But, as an interesting piece in New York Magazine points out, while the print paper is hurting, there are some very interesting things happening at the paper's website.

In "The New Journalism: Goosing The Gray Lady," Emily Nussbaum discusses how some "renegade" reporters and web staffers at the Times have turned some of its online content into truly interactive, smart journalism. What's happening at the NYtimes.com, Nussbaum argues, "may be the only happy story in journalism."

Not only does this piece highlight the fact that there are job opportunities in online journalism, jobs like online editor, it also points to the way that journalism is evolving.

'Ugly Betty' Networks

Saturday January 10, 2009
I've talked about how it can be fun, and somewhat informative, to see the media depicted in entertaintment and a recent example is this week's episode of Ugly Betty. For those who don't watch the show, it follows plucky young Betty Suarez who works as an assistant at the fictional Mode Magazine and dreams of landing a more meaningful gig as a journalist.

I'm a fan of the show and, while it doesn't always present the most realistic picture of what it's like to work in the magazine industry, it does occasionally show things somewhat like they are. In this week's episode Betty is forced to network for a magazine course she's taking. I bring up the episode -- which you can watch on ABC.com if you missed it when it originally aired -- because it does highlight, albeit in a campy dramatic way, the importance of making professional connections in this business.

Getting Inside the Minds of Agents...and Editors

Wednesday January 7, 2009
If you're interested in working in any profession it's invaluable to read about the career trajectories, and mindsets, of the people who work in that field. How did they get their start? What's their day like? What do they like most about their job? Least?

To that end, there's a great series of Q&A's with book editors and literary agents from Poets & Writers called, not surprisingly, Agents & Editors. (This month the Q&A is with four up-and-coming young agents.) The Q&A's are recommended reading for anyone who's interested in a career as an editor or agent -- or any career in book publishing for that matter -- since they give you a sense of what it might be like to be on the job.
