Ecology Action Job Opportunity

Assistant Garden Manager

Common Ground Research Garden/Mini-Farm – Willits, CA
2008

Position Overview:

Ecology Action is currently seeking an Assistant Garden Manager who will be involved with both research and hands-on garden responsibilities.  This position works closely with our Garden Manager in planning and overseeing garden projects, providing leadership and support for team members, and supervising interns. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to work within a research structure, with the ability to be flexible and to draw on intuitive aspects of working with the land and other team members. Good people skills are a must for training, tours, and internal team development. This includes the ability to work with people from their own perspective and to nurture their growth. The successful candidate will be able to both give and receive instruction as needed. We often have interns from foreign countries, so fluency in another language, Spanish in particular, is a plus. Also desired is someone who is open to developing and maintaining some special project sections of the garden. Our intent is to attract a candidate who is well suited to this position and who will enjoy the range of tasks for the long term. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be a creative, self-directed person who can identify opportunities for expansion within the position.

Background on Ecology Action:

Ecology Action is an educational nonprofit organization that has spent over a third of a century developing and codifying the organic GROW BIOINTENSIVE Sustainable Mini-Farming approach that is low-cost and non-polluting. It maximizes agricultural yields, builds soil fertility, and minimizes inputs of water, energy, and nutrients in organic fertilizer form. Ecology Action has demonstrated results in helping communities in the U.S. and worldwide to grow plentiful and nutritious food without depleting precious natural resources, and by using sophisticated, yet low-technology approaches to farming and marketing. Ecology Action’s work is centered at its Common Ground Research and Demonstration Garden/Mini-Farm located in Willits in northern California.  The site was chosen due to its difficult growing conditions, including poor soil quality and hilly terrain, to best demonstrate the effectiveness of the GROW BIOINTENSIVE approach and its adaptability to diverse climates and cultures.
