The 2004 DOE Industrial Hygiene Award, also known as the Don Ross Award, was presented to Roger D. Mitchell, CIH, CSP, of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), by Paul Kruger, Manager, Pacific Northwest Site Office, and Robe Enge, PNNL Director of Environment, Safety, Health and Quality.

Mr. Mitchell was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the industrial hygiene field, including the development and implementation of an integrated biological safety program at the PNNL. This program contributes significantly to worker health and safety by providing an efficient system to identify, evaluate, and control risks associated with biological etiologic agents.

The Industrial Hygiene Award was established by the Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Hygiene Coordinating Committee (IHCC) to acknowledge exceptional service and contributions to DOE industrial hygiene programs. The award, presented annually by the IHCC, is known informally as the “Don Ross Award” in honor of Dr. Ross' pioneering work and lifetime accomplishments during his career with the AEC and DOE, and being the award’s first recipient.

Eligibility for the award is open to all current and former DOE and DOE contractor employees engaged in the practice of industrial hygiene or allied occupational health professions. A description of the DOE Industrial Hygiene Award and nomination process are available on the web at: http://www.hss.doe.gov/HealthSafety/WSHP/ihcc/.
