Summary

Responsible for assigned activities within an engineering discipline in support of facility design, operation and maintenance. Applies broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of complex engineering analyses. Performs all aspects of work in engineering operations within discipline. Performs conventional structural design and analysis. Provides system integration within and across disciplines. Provides construction and project support. May provide direction to technicians. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Utilizes engineering technology to accomplish work. Continuously improves work processes to meet customer needs.

Job Duties

1. Safety and security are primary responsibilities for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training and assures compliance; makes safety and security an integral part of every task. Takes steps to stop work if unsafe conditions exist or security is compromised.
2. Adheres to engineering policies, programs, procedures and practices.
3. Researches, assembles, and/or evaluates information or data regarding industry practices or applicable regulatory changes affecting engineering policies or programs; recommends sound, practical solutions to complex issues.
4. Develops professional expertise, applies Laboratory policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues.
5. Applies standard engineering principles, theories, concepts and techniques within discipline to facility operations lifecycle.
6. Provides resolutions to an assortment of problems of moderately complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
7. Performs conventional structural design and analysis.
8. Contributes to the fulfillment of projects and organizational objectives.
9. Works under continual supervision and follows established directions. Uses judgment within defined practices and procedures to determine appropriate actions.
10. Assists in the design, installation and commissioning of commercial, industrial and safety-related systems.
11. Utilizes engineering technology tools including CAD, CNC, CAE, etc., programs and develops basic software tools.
12. Assists with process and instrumentations control.
13. Prepares documents, studies, and reports associated with facility lifecycles and space requirements as directed.
14. Provides conventional engineering construction and project support.
15. Assists in demand and planned maintenance and performs predictive maintenance.
16. Work is reviewed while in progress for accuracy, soundness of judgment and overall adequacy.
17. Promotes a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Job Knowledge

• Knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.
• Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
• Knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
• Awareness of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.
• Awareness of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
• Knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
• Knowledge of project and process engineering practices.

Education

• Position typically requires a baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college or university and, practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Direction

A. Supervision Received

• Receives operational supervision and technical guidance from a project engineer, senior engineering supervisor, or chief engineer.
• Objectives are defined and results are subject to supervisory review.

• May direct the work of technicians, drafters, etc
