A Message From Mayor Jerry Johnson

I want to personally, welcome you to our city. Alpine, nestled in the mountains of West Texas, is a truly unique city with friendly folks and our high , dry, and cool year round mountain climate is unequaled in Texas. Alpine has been rated as one of the top ten small towns in Texas by Texas Highways Magazine. I welcome you to visit Alpine and experience a true feeling of the Last Frontier. Alpine is the gateway to Big Bend National Park, Big Bend State Ranch Park, Fort Davis National Historic Site, Fort Davis State Park and many other wonderful sites and activities.

Alpine is the home of Sul Ross State University. Sul Ross was established in 1923 and over the years has grown from a small teachers college into a University with an outstanding reputation for excellence in Texas and elsewhere in the United States.

Alpine offers outstanding medical care through the Big Bend Regional Medical Center whose services include general medicine, surgical procedures, obstetrics, emergency medical and trauma care.

Our law enforcement agencies, Alpine Police Department, Brewster County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Border Patrol, Texas Department of Public Safety, and others, all work together giving Alpine one of the lowest crime rates in Texas.

Our education system features excellent public school campus’s along with a private Montessori and Christian school and Sul Ross University.

Our recreation activities include a semi private country club and golf course, a municipal swimming pool, numerous city parks, a city trails system and many other adventure opportunities to explore our wonderful outdoors.

We invite you to take part in our many city activities, Cowboy Poetry and Trappings of Texas- February, Cinco de Mayo Fiesta-May, Fourth of July Celebration-July, Theatre of the Big Bend –during the summer, Working Ranch Rodeo and Chuckwagon Cookoff-August, Big Bend Ballon Bash-September, Sul Ross State University Rodeo-October, Gallery Night-November and many other activities held throughout the year.
