Snowstorm turning out to be weaker than expected

by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger
Saturday January 10, 2009, 7:17 PM

A jogger makes his way through Branch Brook Park in Newark during today's snowfall.

A steady, light snowfall throughout central and northern New Jersey today led to a spate of accidents on slippery roads, but did not proved to be the ornery storm initially expected.

State Police reported a number of weather-related accidents once snow began falling early this afternoon. Accidents were reported on the New Jersey Turnpike and Routes 287 and 21.

With fewer cars on the roadways on a Saturday afternoon, however, weather-related accidents were minimized, said Sgt. Stephen Jones, a State Police spokesman.

Jersey snowstorm through the eyes of the innocent

by Mark DiIonno/Star-Ledger Columnist
Saturday December 20, 2008, 7:00 AM

The winter romance is dead.

The Weather Channel, and every other "real-time" traffic and weather media outlet killed it.

Snow is no longer anticipated with holiday glee. It is dreaded.

It is no longer God's magical blanket, that quilted white cover of peace and quiet that forces us to stop our clocks and reflect from the warmth of our homes. Now it's just one big, snarling inconvenience. A commuter's nightmare, a school-closer, a power outage waiting to happen.

Pedestrian schleps through the snow in Newton.

Jersey Shore is under high-surf advisory

by The Associated Press
Thursday November 06, 2008, 11:25 PM

Surf's up along the Shore.

The National Weather Service has issued a high-surf advisory from Sandy Hook to Cape May until 7 a.m. Friday.

Strong northeast winds and long swells are creating waves of 6 to 7 feet at the beaches. That condition likely will cause beach erosion and dangerous rip currents.

Forecasters also said there could be some tidal flooding in the back bays because the strong winds are not allowing drainage at low tide.

In New Brunswick, where 1.5 inches fell, it was the first measurable snowfall in October in 36 years and only the fifth in October since record-keeping began in 1894, state climatologist David Robinson said.
