Student Learning at Shasta College

Mission Statement
The Student Learning Area provides the resources required for students to be successful in college, to encourage their personal growth and to assist them in becoming independent, life-long learners.

Learning Center
The Student Learning Area provides free learning support including tutoring in a variety of learning centers. These include the Writing Center, Math and Business Learning Center, Science Learning Center and the ESL office. Viewing the links to these centers will provide more detailed information.

Student Development Courses
How well student services and instruction are integrated has been shown to be a major factor in a student's probability for success. When you participate in Student Development courses you will learn about services available to you on campus and develop strengths in career exploration, decision making, study skills and strategies to be more successful in your future courses. You will have the opportunity to be in a class with other students who have the same concerns, thus providing you with mutual support and the sharing of information and resources.

What are Basic Skills?

Basic skills are those foundation skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and ESL (English as a Second Language), as well as learning and study skills, which are necessary for students to succeed in college-level work.

Basic Skills at Shasta College
Many students show up at Shasta College needing to boost their skills in one or more areas. Don’t feel alone - this is normal. Shasta College offers courses that will bring you “up to speed.” Many of these courses are under the Basic Skills program. See the link for basic skills for more information.
