Gift of Life Quilt

Transplant Manitoba is in the process of developing and promoting a Gift of Life quilt as an opportunity to honor donor families and celebrate living donors. These patches of love will help raise awareness of organ donation and pay tribute to those who have given the gift of life. Kidney recipient Lorena Maendal and her living kidney donor sister Shirley Maendal have agreed to lend their sewing expertise to this project. If you would like to create a patch for this quilt, we ask that you use a white eight inch (8”x8”)polyester/cotton square and that your design fills seven inches (7”x7”) of the square. A one inch border is required for the squares to be sewn together to form the quilt. We will not be able to include patches that aren’t within the size requirements. Your quilt patch should reflect your donor’s personality. It may include a scanned photo, an age, a favourite meaningful fabric, ribbon or badge, or some other design that reflects his or her personality.
Lorena and Shirley will assemble all the patches into a work of art! Please send your completed square to Sybil Stokoloff, Transplant Manitoba-Gift of Life Program, Room GE441-820 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3A 1R9

Garden of Life

The Garden of Life is an ever-growing symbol of the new life that is possible because of organ donation and transplantation. The Garden, situated in Assiniboine Park across from the Conservatory, is filled with almost 3000 plants that depict the shape, color or care of the organs used in transplantation. This innovative public relations initiative was created in 1998 to heighten awareness of organ donation and transplantation in Manitoba. Volunteers, many of whom are transplant recipients and donor family members, lovingly maintain the Garden from May through September. Interested in volunteering? Call 204-787-1897 today!

Tree of Life

The Tree of Life is Transplant Manitoba’s Gift of Life special way of honouring organ donors, living donors, and their families. The Tree of Life is beautifully decorated with leaves that feature the donor’s first name and last initial. In addition to our traditional ceremony, each family present receives a donor medal. This beautiful medal acknowledges the kindness and generosity of all living donors, organ donors, and their families.
