Northern Community Profiles

Manitoba’s northern communities are defined as any community located north of the 53rd parallel. There are more than 50 communities in Manitoba’s northern region. It is home to about a dozen major communities, the largest being: Thompson, Flin Flon, Leaf Rapids, Lynn Lake and Churchill.

Road access to The Pas and Flin Flon is along highways #60 and #10 and road access to Thompson is along Highway #6. Limited access is available by rail, winter road and boat to many other communities, including Churchill; while air access is available to virtually all northern communities.

Except for Churchill, Manitoba’s northern communities were mainly created as resource-based towns and continue to employ residents in mining, forestry and hydro development. Churchill was a major trading post during the fur trade era and is now a major seaport. It is also a tourism destination (especially during polar bear and whale watching seasons) and is the economic, social and cultural gateway to the eastern parts of Kivalliq region and Nunavut Territory.
