Connecticut, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, Connecticut received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

For information on Connecticut's current program activities, see Connecticut.

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Maintained the state HIV/STD Task Force Committee to develop guidance on program planning, state policy review, and materials review, and to strengthen the statewide infrastructure for providing effective HIV prevention education programs to youth.

  • Provided research-based training and technical assistance to health coordinators, teachers, nurses, mental health providers, administrators, and other youth-serving professionals on a wide range of educational topics in HIV/STD prevention.

  • Developed and implemented a plan to work with agencies that serve youth in high-risk situations, including administrators and professionals in the juvenile justice system; youth service bureaus; school-based mental health providers for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and questioning youth; and HIV/STD training cadre members who address the prevention needs of youth disproportionately infected with, and affected by, HIV.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Implemented and sustained, for the purposes of program planning and evaluation, an effective, well-integrated health behavior surveillance system for Connecticut students in grades 9 −12.

  • Partnered with the Department of Health to administer the YRBS.

  • Collaborated with a regional education service center to provide professional development for school and community educators to enhance understanding of how to interpret student health data, incorporate data into prevention education, and educate policy makers on the importance of collecting and using data to inform program planning.
