Called Citizen Science, this new form of data collection could significantly help officials collect and analyze critical data about water. IBM is working with WWMD to exploring other means of collecting data, and measure the effectiveness of WWMD test kits. IBM has developed a number of smarter water and management offerings under its Big Green Innovations initiative, part of a $100 million investment in 10 new businesses based on ideas generated during Innovation Jam, an IBM-led effort to gather ideas from thousands of clients, employees and thought leaders around the world.

OPALThe Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) network (United Kingdom) has received a grant from The Big Lottery Fund to inspire a new generation of nature-lovers by encouraging people to spend more time outdoors understanding the world around them. One of these is the OPAL water survey, which is the third national survey. Ponds and lakes are important havens for freshwater wildlife, but many are badly affected by air pollution, by nutrients washing in from the land around them, and by rubbish. The OPAL water survey assesses the water quality of a pond through identifying the invertebrate animals and conducting simple tests to see the clarity of the water and also how acidic or alkaline the water is. By putting information from many lakes and ponds together, we can see which are in good condition and which need improving. OPAL is working with WWMD to add data collected through its survey to the WWMD database.
