The USCC Organization

The USCC is dedicated to the development, expansion and promotion of the composting industry based upon science, principles of sustainability, and economic viability. The organization will achieve this mission by:

  • encouraging, supporting and performing compost related research
  • promoting best composting practices
  • establishing standards
  • advocating for beneficial public policies
  • educating professionals and the public about the benefits of composting and compost utilization
  • developing training materials for composters
  • developing markets for compost products

The USCC offers networking opportunities through its annual conference, list serve and on-line forum. We support our member’s education with training materials, access to the most up-to-date research, and our newsletter, the Compost Communicator. The USCC is an advocate for public policies and regulations that promote good composting and the beneficial use of compost. We work to increase the value of compost in the market place with programs like the Seal of Testing Assurance and International Compost Awareness Week and by producing materials that our members can use to help market their compost-based products.

Established in 1990, the US Composting Council (USCC) is the only national organization in the United States dedicated to the development, expansion and promotion of the composting industry. The USCC achieves this mission by encouraging, supporting and performing compost related research, promoting best management practices, establishing standards, educating professionals and the public about the benefits of composting and compost utilization, enhancing compost product quality, and developing training materials for composters and markets for compost products. USCC members include compost producers, marketers, equipment manufacturers, product suppliers, academic institutions, public agencies, nonprofit groups and consulting/engineering firms.

The USCC is a non-profit 501(c) (6) organization that also directs the Composting Council Research and Education Foundation (CCREF), a 501(c) (3) charitable foundation, which administers public and private research and education activities.

The USCC’s Annual Conference & Trade Show is Composting Industry’s premiere event, providing industry professionals with educational, networking, and career advancement opportunities. The Annual Conference is the largest conference and exhibition in North America for the composting, wood waste, and organics recycling industry and is the only national conference run by and for composting professionals. The event also provides opportunities for those affiliated with the industry to learn more about composting and applications for compost use. For more information, visit other pages of this web site. The USCC formed an ongoing partnership with the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) and the Solid Waste Association for North America (SWANA). The Seal of Testing Assurance Program (STA) was created to bring reliability and consistency to compost testing. In partnership with the Compost Council of Canada and other international compost groups the USCC has helped launch International Compost Awareness Week, to raise compost’s profile every spring.
