Abstract : Acid mine drainage (AMD) contributes significantly to acid deposition in surface waters within the coal regions of Appalachia and the Ohio River basin. Mitigation of AMD has been achieved through direct addition of alkaline materials such as calcium carbonate (crushed form is agricultural lime). Processes resulting in acid deposition have had a significant negative effect on aquatic resources in North America, including loss of important commercial and recreation fisheries (Fraser and Britt, 1982). Effects of AMD or other acidified water on fish health (Atchison et al. 1987; Gagen et al. 1993; Norrgren et al. 1993; Simonin et al. 1993) and abundance or ecology (Gunn 1986; Weller et al. 1991; Lacroix 1992; McCormick et al. 1994; Carline et al. 1994) have been well documented for some species. Most effects are linked indirectly to toxicity related to reduced pH or elevated dissolved metals, particularly aluminum.
