Abstract : | The project advances the scientific knowledge, the technology, and the methods for cryopreservation of fish sperm. Cryopreservation of sperm melds several facets of current strategies and goals within fish recovery plans (Taub, 1990). These strategies include maintenance of genetic diversity for propagated or stocked fish, the ability to use gametes from one male for more than one year, and planned increases in population size due to supplementation of managed fish. Research on cryopreservation methods for declining species is a national research need for several species of salmonids, chondrosteans or other genera. There is interest in the establishment of a germ plasm bank and this work also supports or increases the potential for successful establishment of same. |
