Abstract : The U. S. National Park Service is very concerned with changes to land use adjacent to their management units. Many perturbations occurring within management units are sourced outside area boundaries. Development on adjacnt lands can result in habitat fragmentation and degredation, introduction of pollution, pathways for introduction of pests, pathogens, and exotic species and human-wildlife interaction. As a result, an island effect can be created along the park. The objective of the research is to devise and test a methodology to characterize environmental conditions on adjacent lands, drivers of land use change including social and economic dynamics, and policies related to environmental protection and growth management on private lands. A goal is for the most part to utilize readily available national databases which will facilitate transferability of the characterization process.
