Abstract : The focus of this research project is to determine population characteristics (size, density, relative abundance, distribution, sex and age structure, mortality rates, natality, and recruitment) and habitat needs of the Okefenokee-Osceola black bear population. With that information, we will then assess the impacts of land management practices (e.g., prescribed fire, silviculture, agriculture) and the effect of natural, legal, and illegal mortality on the population. Finally, we will determine population growth, sustainable yield, and factors influencing population dynamics of the species. A long-term monitoring method and a database on captured bears, telemetry locations, den sites, etc. will be developed.
