Abstract : | To demonstrate linkages between private landowners and the Biological Resources Division, Champion International Corporation (CIC), has provided the use of a 6700-ac tract of land (the Gulf Tract) in eastern Tennessee to serve as a prototype for development of techniques for monitoring biological resources and to demonstrate the compatibility of ecosystem management and economic development. A wide variety of biological resource data currently exist in and/or adjacent to the Gulf Tract. However, these data vary by location, quality, date, resolution, and approach. Our goals are: 1) to compile the available data regarding biotic and abiotic resources of the Gulf Tract, and to determine which of these data are feasible and appropriate for management of biodiversity, 2) to gain useful information about the techniques, time, and costs associated with collecting these additional data, 3) to identify gaps in the data set necessary for the reasonable management of biological diversity. |
