2009 SART CONFERENCE EXPANDS TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

The SART conference theme for 2009 is “SART:Our Community, Our Investment" and is sponsored by the Sexual Assault Resource Service of Minneapolis, Minnesota, with funding from the Office for Victims of Crime, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, Grant No. 2006-VF-GX-K002.

The ongoing goal of the conference is to further the development and improve the operation of SARTs across the nation. This year’s conference tag line is “SART: Our Community, Our Investment," recognizing that while creating and sustaining SARTs can be challenging, they represent a invaluable investment in community safety and health.

The conference will be held at the Westin Seattle, offering views of spectacular Pudget Sound and the majestic Olympic Mountains. The hotel is within walking distance of the world famous Pikes Place Market, and the monorail to the famous Seattle Space Needle is just steps away.

Online Registration Process Tips:

If you attended the 2007 SART conference, you already have an account. To access your password, go to the log in screen and enter your e-mail address. Your password will be e-mailed to you.

If your e-mail address has changed since registering for the 2007 Conference, please e-mail admin@sartconference.com. We will be happy to update the e-mail address for your account, which will then allow you to use the same registration.

Please note that you may choose one of three payment options after registering and selecting your breakout sessions:

1. You may choose to pay by credit card immediately.
2. Choose to pay by check which prompts an invoice that you may print and mail in with your check.
3. You may delay your payment to allow you time to make arrangements for your funding of the conference.

Which ever option works best for you, we encourage you to select your breakout sessions early before they start to fill up. In the event that a particular workshop is booked to capacity, you will receive an e-mail to let you know that payment will be required to continue holding a spot in that particular session.

See you in Seattle!

98 SPEAKERS, 57 WORKSHOPS, 5 KEYNOTES AND A CLOSING SESSION FEATURING INTERACTIVE IMPROV

The Fifth National SART Training Conference - with its exciting line-up of 98 speakers presenting 57 workshops, five keynotes and a closing interactive improvisational presentation - is focused more than ever before on providing a balance of advanced and basic information, case studies and interactive opportunities, research findings, survivor accounts, time for dialogue among presenters and attendees, and a number of longer sessions that allow for more in-depth exploration of issues.

Four different tracks are represented in 1½ hour and 3-hour workshops: General (addressing a broad topic), Specialized (addressing a specific issue), Specific Populations/Crimes, and Interactive Sexual Assault Scenario. Workshops in the General and Specialized Tracks are geared to:

  • Examine promising practices and emerging issues;
  • Explore lessons that SARTs have learned through their response to actual incidents and/or their efforts to nurture multidisciplinary collaboration;
  • Expand knowledge and improve technical skills; and
  • Consider how to evaluate, sustain and advance SART efforts.
The Specific Populations/Crimes Track explores how to remove barriers to services and justice faced by underserved populations of sex assault victims, as well as strategies to respond to specific types of sex crimes.

INTERACTIVE SCENARIO TRACK

This eight-session interactive workshop with many of our top trainers was well received in 2007.  With two years to “fine tune” this experience, it is guaranteed to be another success.  This year, SART teams will work together to identify and interview the victim and suspects, collect the evidence, evaluate the evidentiary results, decide on charging options, and testify at a mock trial.

SART teams must consist of four members representing four different SART disciplines.  If the team has more than four members, a discipline may be repeated.  Please note that if you sign up for this option you must participate in all eight sessions, so except for the Plenary sessions you will NOT be able to attend other breakout sessions.

OTHER ACTIVITIES TO ENHANCE THE CONFERENCE

In addition to five keynote addresses, eight workshops and an interactive improvisational presentation, a number of other activities are being planned to enhance the SART Training Conference experience.

Informal Opportunities to Connect with Other SARTs: Two optional activities will be offered to facilitate additional interaction among conference attendees, with the goals of increasing professional networks and learning from one another.

Informal Peer Mentoring: Through the Team Scholarship Program, opportunities will be available for veteran SART teams to mentor newly formed or struggling SART teams.  Those applying for scholarships can indicate if they would like to be considered a mentor or mentee.  Mentees and mentors will be paired up prior to the conference and provided each other’s contact information and a tip sheet for making the most out of the mentoring opportunity.  A room will be available for mentoring teams to gathering on May 27 after workshops conclude.  During this first meeting, teams can determine if and how they will connect again during the conference.

Networking within your Discipline: Informal gatherings will be available to promote networking within individual disciplines and groups.  Several members of our conference planning committee have volunteered to “host” these gatherings either on May 26 or 27.  During these gatherings, those attending can decide if they would like to meet again as a group during the conference.  The time and location of the initial gatherings will be publicized on the networking bulletin board by the conference registration desk.

SART Conference Exhibit Hall:  We will again have a variety of exhibitors and co-sponsors available in the SART Conference Exhibit Hall with exhibitors available during breakfast, lunch and breaks.  Our continental breakfasts and refreshment breaks will be served in the Exhibit Hall with seating in the adjacent Grand Ballroom.  Exhibitor information will be available from the Agenda after registration opens.

Optional Tillicum Village Dinner Excursion:   Please consider joining us for this quintessential Seattle experience.  We will travel across Puget Sound by boat to Blake Island the evening of Thursday, May 28th.  After appetizers of clams and clam nectar on the beach, we will move to the longhouse to enjoy a traditional Northwest Native-American style alder baked salmon dinner. A wonderful performance of Native American dances is followed by free time to visit Native American artisans as they work.  You may also wish to walk outdoors or visit the gift shop before we return by boat to Pier 55 in Seattle.  Sign up online for this exciting four-hour excursion once registration opens.

Please note that this optional recreational activity will be offered at an additional charge to the participant.  Space is limited; sign up early!

Local Agency Tour: Information will soon be available regarding the option to visit a local Seattle agency while attending the conference.
