Noxious weeds are a serious threat to the state of Montana. The Department of Agriculture administers a grant program to assist counties, local communities, researchers, and educators in their efforts to solve a variety of weed problems in the state. The department also has the Noxious Weed Seed Free Forage program to help producers add a value-added product to their operation and reduce the spread of noxious weeds.
Montana is leading the way on noxious weed control. The Department of Agriculture along with other agencies and associations have worked hard to create a State Noxious Weed Plan for Montana. The purpose of the Weed Plan is to sustain native vegetation while preventing further spread of noxious weeds. Download a copy of the State Weed Plan. (Note: May require several minutes to download this 96-page document. Printed copies are available from the department.)
The department also has a Biological Weed Program, which helps distribute biological control agents to Montana communities. Biological weed control is a long-term management method, but used in an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan, weed control can be very successful.
The Aquatic Weed Program oversees the licensing and training of aquatic pesticide applicators in Montana for the control of aquatic weeds. Eurasian watermilfoil is on Montana's Noxious Weed list because of the invasive nature of the plant and the problems surrounding states faced with controlling this weed. Currently, Montana does not have Eurasian watermilfoil and our goal is to keep that status.
