Gender Equality Scheme

The University has launched its Gender Equality Scheme, approved by the University Court on 26th June, setting out how it plans to promote gender equality across all of its activities. The Gender Equality Scheme is part of the University’s overall strategy on Equality and Diversity and accompanies similar schemes on Disability and on Race Equality. The development and publication of the scheme was informed by consultation with large numbers of staff and students through focus groups and questionnaires. The University wishes to thanks all those who contributed to this consultation.

The publication of the scheme is required by the Equality Act 2006 which places a duty on all public authorities, including the University, to:

  1. to eliminate unlawful discrimination and harassment
  2. to promote equality of opportunity between men and women.

The overall objective of the Gender Equality Scheme is to set out the approach that the University will take to meeting this duty and to mainstream gender equality into all its functions.

The Scheme also sets out a number of more detailed objectives relating to staff and students and is accompanied by an Action Plan which details the action which the University will take over the next three years in this regard.
