Health Impacts of Particulate Matter :
  • PM invades the respiratory system's natural defenses and lodges deep in the lungs. Normal body defenses are coughing and sneezing-which do not release these harmful pollutants.
  • PM can increase the number and severity of asthma attacks, cause or aggravate bronchitis and other lung disease, and reduces the body's ability to fight infection.
  • Sensitive groups that may be more vulnerable to PM health impacts are children, the elderly, adults exercising outdoors, people with heart or lung disease, and those suffering from asthma and bronchitis.
Please help reduce PM by doing one or more of the following:
  • Ride the bus, carpool, or telework.
  • Eliminate all unnecessary driving and/or combine trips.
  • Do not use your fireplace or woodstove unless it is an EPA-approved fireplace or woodstove.
  • Keep your tires inflated to proper levels and your car tuned.
  • Change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
  • To find a carpool or vanpool partner, call Capitol Rideshare at (602) 542-RIDE or register on line at capitolrideshare.com.
