Deciduous tree up to 15 m high in the wild (to small rounded tree in cultivation). Young branches pubescent. Leaves trifoliate. Leaflet ovate to elliptic-oblong, 5-12 cm long, 2-6 cm wide. Only the middle one is stalked. Lamina dull green above, grayish pubescent beneath. Margin entire to shallowly serrate especially on the apical half. Foliage with beautiful autumn colors. Samara yellowish, 3-5 cm long, densely pubescent. Quite hardy.
