White-tailed Deer

Painting of a White-tailed Deer by Jean Gawalt
Art by Jean Gawalt

The people of New York greatly appreciate and enjoy deer in many ways. If not managed properly, deer numbers can increase dramatically, which can cause problems for farmers, homeowners, and can cause road hazards. This can also affect the condition of the deer by harming their habitat and other wildlife. On this page you'll find links with information on how the Department of Environmental Conservation manages deer numbers. The goal is to balance deer with their habitat, human land uses and recreational interests.
