California Native Plant Society (CNPS) is a statewide non-profit organization of amateurs and professionals with a common interest in California's native plants.  Their Rare Plant Program tracks all of California's over 2000 rare plants to the quad level.  They produce a hard copy publication (the Inventory of rare and endangered vascular plants of California) and an associated queryable electronic version.  The CNDDB works in close cooperation with CNPS to gather and process plant data in the interest of upkeeping our similar databases.  CNPS also produces numerous other publications of interest to plant enthusiasts.  They can be reached at:

NatureServe represents a network of member programs comprising 75 independent centers for the collection of data about the plants, animals, and ecological communities of the Western Hemisphere.  NatureServe works with an international network of member programs comprising natural heritage programs and conservation data centers in all 50 U.S. states, Canada, and Latin America.  NatureServe and its member programs not only collect and manage detailed local information on plants, animals, and ecosystems, but analyze and distribute it to help meet local, national, and global conservation needs.

California Interagency Wildlife Task Group (CIWTG) is a cooperative effort between agencies and universities in California created by a 1981 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), later updated in 1985.  Its mission is to promote improved understanding of the biology, distribution, and habitat requirements of California's vertebrate wildlife, and the application of that information to the management of California's lands.  To date, its greatest accomplishment has been the initial development and oversight of the California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR) System, maintained by the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) since 1985.  In 1993, CIWTG signed an MOU with CDFG , setting forth the responsibilities of each entity in the continued improvement of the CWHR System.  Links to member agencies and universities may be found at:

Calflora is a botanical resource for California on the internet.  It provides access to information about all 8375 currently recognized vascular plants in California, including over 660,000 records of plant observations and 20,000 photographs.  CNDDB contributes information to Calflora and staff serve on the Calflora advisory board.  The website address is:

USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station (PSW) is the research and development branch of the US Forest Service in California , Hawaii and the U.S. affiliated Pacific Islands.  They develop and deliver science-based information, technologies, understanding, and applications to help people make well-informed decisions about natural resource management, conservation, and environmental protection.  PSW has worked with CDFG since the early 1980's on the California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR) System and is currently developing a prototypical spatially-explicit wildlife model that will become part of CWHR.  The website address is:

National Gap Analysis Program and University of California at Santa Barbara have partnered with us to produce and distribute the California Gap Analysis data and compact disc.

Our California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR) system was used in the "gap analysis" which is a term that refers to the evaluation of the management status of plant communities, vertebrate species, and vertebrate species richness by a spatial overlay of biological distribution data on a map of existing biological reserves.  The website address is:
