Marine Life
Close to shore at Montauk Point on Long Island, bluefish and striped bass surround schools of menhaden. Local anglers cast out lines into the surf, hoping to catch a big fish. Along the rocky shores of Long Island Sound, American lobsters hide, waiting patiently for prey to wander too close to their strong claws. Lying between blades of eelgrass in Peconic Bay, a blue eyed bay scallop feeds on small microscopic plants carried by the water currents. With inhabitants like the ancient horseshoe crab that crawls on the ocean bottom and the hard clam that burrows in the muddy sand in Long Island Sound, New York State has a wide variety of marine organisms that live in our state waters.
