   About Map Michigan

Map Michigan welcomes you to search and explore various places and points of interest throughout our State. Looking for a certain address? Have a weekend destination in mind, but don’t know how to get there? The tools available on this site are designed to assist the public in meeting these and many other map-related needs.

Map Michigan offers a variety of geographic search options. Information to be displayed ranges from specified addresses, planning a route, street intersections, coordinates, zip codes, points of interest and specialized maps. Points of Interest maps are user-specified features, such as business services, education locations, governmental facilities, travel and recreation locations, and more. Specialized maps consist of items such as schools, boat launches and waterfalls.

In addition, Map Michigan also allows one to identify a chosen location on the map and receive information about that location, such as who the legislative representatives are, as well as a link to the representatives home web page.

The Map Michigan help document is designed to assist with the usage of the Map Michigan website.

Address Search

This feature assists with locating a specified address, such as a home or business, in the State of Michigan on the map. To search for an address, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Choose Address Search from homepage or, select “Find a Location” on the left navigational bar and select “Address Search”.
Step 2: Enter the address to be located. The different components of the address are as follows:

House #: The house number of the building to be located.
Directions: The prefix or suffix of the street, which provides directional information for delivery.
Street Name: The primary name of the street where the building resides.
Street Type: The type of the street to be located.
City: The city in which the building is located. Please spell city name in its entirety. (Example: West Stockbridge rather than W Stockbridge)
Zip code: The 5-digit zip code, which is applied for general delivery.
Example:
Address #: 556
Direction: N
Street Name: Baker
Street Type: Rd.
City: Detroit
Zip code: 48124

Step 3: Click the “Map It!” icon.
Step 4: If there are multiple options to map for the location entered, a list will appear. Locate the map desired and click the associated “Map It!” icon.

A map will appear with the address requested. The address location mapped will appear with a red star. Next to the red star will be the address information in blue text. To the right of the map, under My Points of Interest, will be a layer of Address Search noted.

Problems locating the address: If the address to be located does not find a location, please check the information entered in the Address Search screen and try again. If there is not a match again, eliminate some of the information placed in the address search screen. For example, eliminate the city and/or the street type. If this is still not working, eliminate everything except the address number and the street name. If a search is performed with just the address number and street name, there will be many options to choose from. Search through the options that are received.

Intersection Search

This feature assists with locating the intersection of any two cross-streets in the state of Michigan on the map. To search for an intersection, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Enter in the street name of one of the streets creating the intersection. Make sure the street type and street direction are not included in the street name.

Example:
The intersection is N Oak St. and Main St. in Grand Rapids, MI. To locate this intersection, note the following information in the Intersection Search screen.

Street Name:   Oak
Cross Street Name:   Main
Place:   Grand Rapids

Step 2: Enter in the street name of the street that intersects with the 1st street name entered.
Step 3: Enter in the place in which the intersection is located. The Place may be the city, township, or county.

If the place in unknown, do not enter in a place. All possible options in the state will be returned for that intersection.

Step 4: If there are multiple intersections to map for the intersection entered, a list will appear. Locate the map desired and click the associated “Map It!” icon.

A map will appear with the intersection requested. The intersection location mapped will appear with a red star. Next to the red star will be the intersection information in blue text. To the right of the map, under My Points of Interest, will be a layer of Address Search noted.

Community Search

The community search allows one to request and locate a community within the state of Michigan. A community may be a Census Designate Place (CDP), city, metro area, township, or village. To search for a community, follow the directions below.

Step 1: Enter the name of the community to be located in the Community Name field.
Step 2: Select a community type in the Community Type field.
Step 3: Click the “Map It!” icon.

At this point in time, a screen with the possible community (communities) will appear.

Step 4: If there are multiple communities to map for the community entered, a list will appear. Locate the map desired and click the associated “Map It!” icon.

A map will appear with the community requested. The community location mapped will appear with a label.

Zip Code Search

The zip code search allows one to request and locate a zip code within the state of Michigan. The zip code to be entered into the zip code field will be the 5 digit zip code. If the zip code is unknown, the city can be entered into the field.

Step 1: Enter the Zip code or the City to be located.
Step 2: Click the “Map It!” icon.
Step 3: If there are multiple zip codes to map, a list will appear. Locate the zip code desired and click the associated “Map It!” icon.

A map will appear with the zip code requested. The zip code location mapped will appear showing the area in which the zip code is located.

Coordinate Search

The coordinate search allows one to locate a coordinate within the state of Michigan. Coordinates may be entered as the Latitude and Longitude in decimal degrees or in degrees/minutes/seconds.

Example:
Latitude: 42.733690
Longitude: -84.555482

Or

Latitude: 42D 44M 1S
Longitude: -84D 33M 20S

Step 1: Enter the Latitude and Longitude to be located.
Step 2: Click the “Map It!” icon.

A map will appear with the Latitude and Longitude mapped. The Latitude and Longitude location mapped will appear with a red star. Next to the red star will be the Latitude and Longitude in blue text. To the right of the map, under My Points of Interest, will be the layer of Latitude and Longitude noted.

Points of Interest

The Points of Interest allow one to locate certain points of interest in the state of Michigan. The Points of Interest are in the following categories.

Business Services
Education and Carrier Development
Family, Health, and Safety
Licensing, Certification, and Permits
Michigan Government
Travel and Recreation

Three Points of Interests may be chosen to map. To map Points of Interest, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Select the category on the left navigational bar. Example: Family, Health, and Safety.
Step 2: Select the Point of Interest to map by clicking a check mark in the box next to the Point of Interest.
Step 3: When all Points of Interest are check marked, click on “Add to My Points of Interest” icon. The Points of Interest chosen will appear to the right under “My Points of Interest”.
Step 4: Click the “Map It!” icon.

A map will appear with the points of interest requested. The Points of Interest location mapped will appear with a symbol. To the right of the map, under My Points of Interest, will be a layer of the Points of Interest selected with their corresponding symbol.

Plan a Route

This will allow one to create a route between two physical addresses within the state of Michigan. To Plan a Route, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Enter the address of the starting location.
Step 2: Enter the address of the location to go to.
Step 3: Click the “Map It!” icon.

A screen will appear with options for the starting and ending point. Select the starting and ending point desired. When the addresses are selected, they will be highlighted in blue.

Step 4: Click the “Map It!” icon.

A map with the route will appear. A green “S” signifies the starting point. A red “E” signifies the ending point. A green highlight will mark the route from the starting to the ending point.

Information: The information section is located below the map. The starting and ending addresses are noted at the top. Below the address information are the directions, distance, and cumulative mileage for the route planned are provided.

Maps of Interest

Maps of Interest provide the user with the option of selecting a map of the state of Michigan depicting specific entities. To view a list of available Maps of Interest, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Select Maps of Interest on the left navigational bar.
Step 2: Select one of the Maps of Interest by clicking the associated “Map It!” icon.

A map with the interests selected will appear. Each Map of Interest will have its own designated symbol. To the right of the map, under “My Points of Interest”, the layer selected in the Feature Maps will be displayed with the associated symbol.

Map Tools

Print: This tool allows one to print the desired map. To print, click the Print icon. A printer-friendly version of the map will appear in a new window. A printer selection box will open. Select the desired printer and click the print button. Once the map has been sent to the printer, the printer-friendly version window will close.

Save: This tool allows one to save the desired map. To save, click the Save Map icon.

Email: This tool allows one to email the desired map. To email, click the Email Map icon.

Clear: This tool allows one to clear the map of all selected features. To clear, click the Clear Map icon.

Enlarge: This tool allows one to enlarge the current map view. To enlarge, click the enlarge icon.

Zoom Options:

Zoom In: This tool allows one to view an area of interest with more detail by clicking on that area of the map. To Zoom in, there are two options.

Option 1: Click on the plus marker by “Zoom IN”, then click on the area of the map where more detail is needed.

Option 2: Click on one of the level buttons to the right of the highlighted level button and the map will automatically Zoom in based on the center of the existing map.

Zoom Out: This tool allows one to view an area of interest with less detail and an overall vantage point by clicking once on the map. To zoom out, there are two options.

Option 1: Click on the minus marker by “Zoom Out”, then click on the area of the map where less detail is needed.

Option 2: Click on one of the level buttons to the left of the highlighted level button and the map will automatically Zoom out based on the center of the existing map.

View entire map: Click on the far-left level button to view the entire state of Michigan.

Re-center: This tool allows one to re-center the map on a selected point. To re-center, click re-center tool, then click map to re-center on selected point.

Identify: This tool allows one to identify information about a selected area of the map. To identify, click the Identify icon, then click feature on map to be identified. A red plus (“+”) sign will be placed on the map noting the area being identified. The identify icon will display the following information:
Civil Division: (Central Designated Place (CDP), City, Township, Village)
County: (County)
US Congress Representative: (US Congressional District Representative name and homepage)
State Senator: (State Senate District Representative name and homepage)
State Representative: (State House District Representative name and homepage)
Coordinates: (Latitude and Longitude)
Town, Range, Section: (Public Land Survey Line delineations)

In addition to providing representative information, web links to each representative’s homepage are provided.

Pan: This tool allows one to move the map around the screen in the north, south, east, and west directions. Click one of the four icons located on the edge of the map to pan in the north, south, east, or west direction.

Location Overview: This tool allows one to view the current area map in relation to its location in the state of Michigan.

Refresh Map: This tool allows one to refresh the current map view. To refresh, click Refresh icon.

Legend: This tool will bring up a map key, which gives a list of symbols that appear on the map. The legend will remain hidden unless the tool is clicked.

Street Map: This tool allows one to select the street information as the base layer display for the map. To view Street Map, click the Street Map icon. (The Street Map is the map default.)

Aerial Photo: This tool allows one to select aerial photographs as the base layer display for the map. To view aerial photographs, click the Aerial Photo icon.

Topo Map: This tool allows one to select topographic maps as the base layer display for the map. To view topographic maps, click the Topo Map icon.

Elevation Map: This tool allows one to select topographic maps as the base layer display for the map. To view topographic maps, click the Topo Map icon.

Satellite Map: This tool allows one to select satellite maps as the base layer display for the map. To view satellite maps, click the Satellite Map icon.

Star: The star displays on the map and notes the location of the address, intersection, community, zipcode, or coordinates requested.

 
LOON ALERT!
This is the alarm call of the common loon. Boaters should stay 150 yards or more from loons.  Boating too near loons may cause them to abandon their nest or young. You can help conserve loons by enjoying them from a distance.
