Maple Syrup |
W.K.
Kellogg Forest are offers you the chance to beat cabin fever, help
others and learn to make a traditional spring favorite -- maple syrup.
Volunteers will tap trees, collect sap, operate the sap evaporator and
package maple syrup at the Augusta-area forest from mid-February through
mid-April. Activities are weather dependent, as sap runs on warm
days following very cold nights.
A Maple Syrup Open House
is scheduled on Saturday, March 15 from 11am to 5
pm. Volunteers are needed to help plan and staff open house
activities.

Kellogg Bird Sanctuary Resource
Center / Gift shop |
If you enjoy nature and meeting fascinating people,
the MSU Kellogg Bird Sanctuary has a volunteer opportunity for
you.
The Bird Sanctuary needs volunteers to help
staff the Resource Center / Gift Shop on weekends throughout the year. Resource CenterGreeters / Gift Shop Cashier volunteers are asked to work one Saturday or
Sunday shift per month. From April through October volunteers may
choose between a 9 am to 1 pm shift or a 1 to 5 pm shift. From
November through March volunteer shifts are 11 am to 4 pm.
New volunteers will be trained by Bird Sanctuary
staff and are asked to and spend time shadowing an experienced volunteer until
they are comfortable to work on their own.
Training includes a brief history of the Kellogg
Bird Sanctuary and W.K. Kellogg customer service, cash register sales,
and basic store operations. Prior experience is not required.
This is a wonderful opportunity to volunteer in
a natural, relaxed environment. To become a Bird Sanctuary

plantings to create an attractive and functional buffer zone between
lawn areas and the lake will be underway this spring. Help is
needed to plant and maintain this area as a demonstration for lakefront
property owners (3-4 hrs/wk). |

Manor House |
Help us
share a piece of local history with visitors from around the corner and
around the world by becoming a W.K. Kellogg Manor House volunteer.
The recently renovated Manor is open
for tours and special events. Anyone interested in learning about
our local history, W.K. Kellogg and his legacy, is invited to become a
W.K. Kellogg Manor House Docent. Training sessions will include
learning about house construction, W.K. Kellogg's life and tips on how
to give a tour to prepare you for sharing the house with the community.
New Manor
Volunteer training will be held from 9 to 11am on Wednesday,
April 30, Wednesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 14 in the Manor House Billiard Room. New volunteers
should plan to attend all three sessions as different training materials will
be presented at each meeting.
Manor House
volunteers should be available at least two half-days each month.

Blood Drive |
In
addition to donors, volunteers are needed in various areas, including
set-up (3), registration/greeter (1), refreshments (1), unit aide (1),
donor observer (1), and clean-up (3). Volunteers may sign up for
one or two shifts: 11:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Interpreters |
If you're interested in
nature, animals, the environment or helping others learn, you are
invited to become a volunteer at Michigan State University's W. K.
Kellogg Biological Station (KBS), located near here.
Several volunteer
orientations and training sessions are scheduled during March and April. They will focus on training tour guides for the
Kellogg Bird Sanctuary,
Kellogg Farm,
Kellogg Forest, and
W. K.
Kellogg Manor House. After attending training, new guides are invited
to follow experienced guides on a few tours before going out on their
own. New guides begin leading groups when they are comfortable with
the information.
The following interpreter training sessions are scheduled:

Summer Adventure Camp Counselors |
The MSU
Kellogg Bird Sanctuary's is
looking for teen volunteers (Volunteens), to help with a Summer Science
Camp.
Volunteens should be at least 13 years old, enjoy
working in an outdoor setting and have an interest in working with
children from 5 to 12 years old. Counselors are asked to volunteer at
least one week (Monday through Friday) during the summer and be
available from 8:45 am to 3 pm each day.
The 2008
Adventure Camp sessions are: June 23-27, July 7-11, July
14-18 and July 21-25. Camp counselors will greet campers as they
arrive, assist with camper supervision during activities, help
with daily activity setup and cleanup and help campers find the person
picking them up after camp each day.
As a
summer science camp counselor, Volunteens will learn organizational and
leadership skills along with working in a friendly environment with
helpful and appreciative staff.
