Collecting a Sample Weed

When collecting a weed specimen for identification, you should note the following aspects of the plant and its location:

    Collector's name (that's You!)

    Date

    Location

    Habitat

            Sun, shade, partial shade

            Moisture of the soil

How the land is being used

Soil type (sand, silt, clay, etc.)

Other types of plants that might be present

Growth form--tree, shrub, herbaceous plant, vine, etc.

Height and width of the plant (include units, whether you use inches or feet!)

Presence of any fruit or flower, and its color (record what you see, not information from a book)
