Our Education and Research Efforts

Overview of Oregon Tilth research and education programs and efforts.

compost in handResearch is essential to the continuing development of organic and sustainable agriculture. Oregon Tilth strives to promote programs that foster regional food systems, support keeping farmers on the land, sustain natural resources, and combat food insecurity through education and enhanced access to food production resources. Our programs educate organic and conventional farmers, consumers, legislators, backyard gardeners, retailers, and youth about the principles, practices and benefits of sustainable agriculture.

Through supporting on-farm and participatory research efforts, Oregon Tilth seeks to help reduce the demand for agricultural chemicals and enhance the health of food through plant variety development and organic farming systems research. We provide assistance in project development, identification of granting resources, and support for growers and researchers interested in pursuing on-farm and related research, education and demonstration projects.

Through our education projects and programs Oregon Tilth strives to engage a diverse audience of stakeholders. Publishing In Good Tilth, our bi-monthly educational magazine, and offering land-based education programs in our learning gardens though the Organic Education Center, forming partnerships, tabling at trade shows and community events, hosting an annual conference, special workshops, and facilitating and sponsoring growers meetings like the Farmer to Farmer Exchange, are the many ways we strive to promote biologically sound agriculture.
