Research Partnerships

While no single strategy will transform the United States from imported petroleum dependency in the near term, addressing energy source and consumption in the transportation sector is particularly critical to enable individual companies to make decisions regarding the high-volume commercialization of vehicles and fuels that will enable that future.

The Vehicle Technologies Program's approach to implementing research and development activities emphasizes partnerships with industry and academia to develop and validate technologies. This approach ensures that

1. The nation's best resources are applied to research and development activities,
2. Maximum technology transfer takes place, and
3. Government resources are leveraged by industry resources.

U.S. DRIVE: Aims to accelerate the development of pre-competitive technologies that enable a full range of electric-drive and other advanced light-duty vehicles that can eliminate our dependence on imported oil, significantly reduce greenhouse emissions in the transportation sector, and secure U.S. leadership in the development of advanced, clean energy technologies. U.S. DRIVE – Driving Research and Innovation for Vehicle efficiency and Energy sustainability – facilitates pre-competitive technical information exchange among experts who interact as equal partners to discuss R&D needs, develop technology-specific roadmaps, and evaluate R&D progress toward goals and technical targets.
