Alexander Mickelthwate is your Arts & Culture Ambassador

Hello, my name is Alexander Mickelthwate, and I am your Travel Manitoba Arts & Culture Ambassador. As the music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, I welcome you to Canada's cultural capital. Being German and having lived for 10 years in the US, I am completely blown away by the cultural offerings of Winnipeg and Manitoba with world class music, dance, theatre and museums.

Next to its colorful season of concerts, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra offers a unique Indigenous and an edgy Contemporary Festival. Manitoba Opera, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Winnipeg, Groundswell, the Philharmonic Choir and the Folk Festival also present music that will leave you awe struck. There is so much to choose from. If you are in the mood for theatre we have over a dozen gifted theatre companies that will take you away to another time and place. Looking for dance? The Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers are just two of the dazzling troupes that will give you an evening of a life time. I invite you to come to our performances and be transported to new levels of excitement, drama and beauty. And I hope to see you at our next concert, stop by and say hello!

Manitoba Boasts a Wealth of Heritage Offerings

Walking tours, museums and historic sites reveal the stories of Manitoba’s rich past. From fossils of an ancient sea to a re-vitalized 1920s warehouse district that's the envy of historians around North America, we Manitobans have a lot of history-going as far back as half-a-billion years in some cases-you might never have expected to find here. And we're still discovering surprising new ancient treasures.

Come see some of our great old stuff.

Manitoba's People: A Cultural Kaleidoscope of Colour and Energy

Canada's often called a cultural mosaic, and Manitoba is one of the country’s most ethnically diverse provinces.

More than 115,000 people of Aboriginal origin live here along with one of the most sizeable populations of Mennonites in the world. The French Quarter city of St. Boniface boasts the largest population of Francophone Canadians outside of Quebec, and Manitoba is an important centre of Ukrainian culture in Canada. As well, the Gimli area is home to the largest community of Icelandic people outside Iceland. Continue reading "Manitoba's People: A Cultural Kaleidoscope"

A Harvest of Fall Suppers in Manitoba

Down-home cooking, local ingredients, regional delicacies are the recipe for a century-Old autumn tradition.

It’s suppertime in Manitoba. From now through mid-November, dozens of traditional community-based "fall suppers" - buffet feasts of down-home cooking, locally grown ingredients, and family recipes - are being served throughout the central Canadian province. These annual grass-roots get-togethers offer garden-fresh produce and main courses often prepared from locally raised poultry, beef, and pork. Home-baked pies and cakes draw crowds year after year.

The Drum Beat of Tradition I can feel the pulsing of drums before I can hear them. As I get closer to the massive indoor stage, I begin to hear the thread of ancient voices in song. The language I don’t know but the rhythm is contagious. I begin to hum along even though I’ve never hear this song before. I learn later that these are the songs of the Cree, Ojibwe and Dakota Sioux-celebrating together at the annual Manito Ahbee Festival... READ MORE

Where Architecture and Ancestry Meet
I’m standing at the crossroads of two centuries of joy and sorrow. As I crane my neck to catch the top of the St. Boniface Cathedral façade, I can only imagine how many important conversations, blissful unions and tearful goodbyes have taken place on this very spot.

It was the huge open circle of the cathedral that caught my eye from across the river (I later learned this was called a rose window). So I ventured over the stunning Riel Esplanade Bridge and landed in the heart of Winnipeg’s French community, St. Boniface. Thanks to some friendly guides dressed in period costume, I quickly learned that there are been five churches on this spot. The first... READ MORE
