The Illinois Department of Natural Resources' (IDNR) Division of Education sponsors educator workshops through the ENTICE program. These workshops offer Professional Development Hours for teachers.

Please register for workshops through the link shown with each workshop description. A nonrefundable registration fee is required. The fee is $10.00 per person per workshop unless stated otherwise in the workshop description. Should you have questions about workshop registration please email (dnr.teachkids@illinois.gov) or call (217-524-4126) the IDNR Division of Education. Should the IDNR cancel a workshop, registrants will receive a credit certificate toward registration at another workshop of the same type (on site or online). Some restrictions apply.

 Imagining the vast prairies of Illinois’ past is difficult, but you can visit a restored prairie if you join us for this workshop at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Designed for educators of grades kindergarten through eight, you’ll learn about prairie ecology as well as the history of the prairie in Illinois and how humans have affected prairies. We’ll talk a walk through the prairie and discuss the prairie plants that we find. Illinois-specific educational resources will be provided and suggestions will be given for using the prairie and prairie-related resources from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to help you meet Next Generation Science Standards. Course Name:  Winter Wildlife on the Prairie

Course Name:  Prying into Prions Investigating Chronic Wasting Disease

 Protein synthesis is a topic that many students will not be interested in studying, yet you can make it relevant by using this unit. Prion diseases are caused by errors in protein synthesis. One of those diseases, chronic wasting disease, is affecting the white-tailed deer population in Illinois. During this workshop for middle school and high school teachers, you will preview the six lessons and activities, video and other materials in the unit, “Prying into Prions: Investigating Chronic Wasting Disease.” You'll receive this DVD unit and other supplemental materials.  Join staff from the Chicago Botanic Garden as they teach us about the interrelationships of organisms in Illinois woodlands and the special problems associated with woodland restorations. We’ll take a tour to see how these topics relate to the Chicago Botanic Garden and will do some hands-on sampling.  We’ll make a splash as we explore the fascinating organisms that live in Illinois’ wetlands. From below the water’s surface to the treetops, wetlands teem with life. We’ll learn about the life history and identification of representative organisms and will put the skills to practice as we visit a wetland. Hands-on activities will be conducted, and you’ll receive supplemental educational resources. Although targeted to teachers of grades five through eight, other educators are welcome to register and attend the workshop but may need to adapt the materials as appropriate. Professional Development Hours are available. This workshop is part of the ENTICE (Environment and Nature Training Institute for Conservation Education) program from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Course Name:  Illinois Urban Wildlife

 Wildlife is all around us, even in downtown Chicago! Educators of grades prekindergarten through six are invited to participate as we learn where to look for urban wildlife, what you can expect to find, how to identify species and how to improve urban wildlife habitat at your school. Natural resources professionals and educators will instruct about these topics and more, including how species adapt to the urban environment, how humans affect urban wildlife, and how to manage nuisance species. Receive supplemental educational materials to enhance your teaching. This workshop is part of the ENTICE (Environment and Nature Training Institute for Conservation Education) program from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Teachers of other grade levels are welcome to register and attend the workshop but may need to adapt the materials as appropriate. Professional Development Hours are available.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS
ENTICE workshops provide natural resources information, instructional methods and supplemental educational materials. When incorporated into lessons with students, the materials provided encourage and promote stewardship of our state’s natural resources. ENTICE also offers participants the opportunity to network with other educators in a friendly, cooperative, learning environment.

Illinois ENTICE provides the following items for participants.

  • free workshop/resource materials
  • meals during the workshop
  • opportunities to connect with natural resources and education professionals
  • lesson plans and activities correlated to the Illinois Learning Standards
  • for teachers, continuing professional development units

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Workshops are open to all educators and are designed for targeted grade levels. Maximum enrollment for each course is 30 participants.
