Costs of attending this course, including travel, housing, and meals at the MBL, are fully supported by the National Library of Medicine, NIH.

This week-long survey course is designed to familiarize individuals with the application of computer technologies and information science in biomedicine and health science. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on computer exercises, participants will be introduced to the conceptual and technical components of biomedical informatics. The conceptual components will include principles of database design, human-computer interfaces, medical terminologies and coding systems, medical decision analysis methods, clinical information systems architectures, and methods for measuring costs and benefits in health care systems. The technical components will include use of the Internet for biomedical applications, current and emerging wide area network technologies, use of literature and molecular sequence databases, and systems for telemedicine. Evening workshops will teach personal computer skills in using a variety of World Wide Web-based technologies.

Taught by a nationally known faculty, the course will prepare the student to become actively involved in making informed decisions about computer-based tools in his/her organizational environment, and improve the student’s own computer skills.

This is a National Library of Medicine fellowship program directed at medical educators, medical librarians, medical administrators, and young faculty who are not currently knowledgeable but can become agents of change in their institutions. Limited to 30 fellows per session.

Continuing Education Credits
The Massachusetts Medical Society designates this educational activity for a maximum of 39.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This activity meets the criteria of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine for risk management study.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the Joint Sponsorship of the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Marine Biological Laboratory.

The Massachusetts Medical Society is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

This course is also approved for 40 CE contact hours by the Medical Library Association (MLA).
