Cowboy ethics take center stage as part of upcoming speaker series

ARDMORE, Okla. – The third installment of The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation's popular speaker series, Profiles and Perspectives, will highlight the tradition and value of cowboy ethics.

On Tuesday, Jan. 20, Jim Owen, founder and president of Cowboy Ethics and Leadership, and managing director of Austin Capital Management, will share how Americans can rediscover and apply the values that built this country. His presentation, "Beyond Cowboy Ethics: A Wake-Up Call for America About National Character," will take place at 7 p.m. at the Charles B. Goddard Center located at 401 1st Street, S.W., Ardmore, Okla. The presentation is open to the public and offered at no cost, courtesy of the Noble Foundation.

"Mr. Owen's career, in particular his experience on Wall Street, gives him a unique perspective on how cowboy ethics can be applied to any business and even our national economy," said Mary Kate Wilson, Noble Foundation Granting Program Officer and chair of the Profiles and Perspectives Committee. "With foreclosures, layoffs and economic strife filling the pages of our newspapers, rediscovering and applying the values of the American cowboy could provide a valuable resource."

Owen spent more than 35 years on Wall Street, including 15 years as a partner with NWQ Investment Management Company. In 2004, he became dismayed with the rash of corporate scandals and the growing discord in American life. Inspired by his lifelong interest in Western history and lore, he established the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership, and developed a modern-day translation of the code of the cowboy.

As part of his presentation, Owen will explore principles like honor, loyalty and courage that are at the heart of the code and share his belief that America can recapture its national character by rebuilding personal ethics.

The 2008-2009 Profiles and Perspectives season concludes on Tuesday, March 3, at the Washington Theater with "Roving Mars: Spirit, Opportunity and the Exploration of the Red Planet" by Dr. Steven Squyres, who is the face and voice of NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission.
