It wasn't quite as extreme or ridiculous as 'American Idol' tryouts, but it was fun nonetheless. Check out some of the outtakes from the Blazers' national anthem auditions.
Great stuff from Casey Holdahl as of late. Last Friday he had an update of how the guys in town looked during some recent 5-on-5 play. Solid read, take a few and fill your thirst for knowledge. But what really caught my eye was today's update on LaMarcus Aldridge, and his noticeable improvement:
I know what you're thinking: Bout time! And you're right. With training camp a little over a week away, and the dog days of summer coming to an end, we will be breathing life back into the Quick Chat tomorrow at 1 p.m.
There's plenty to talk about as we gear up for the preseason, so lay your questions on me (in the comments section below) and I'll fire 'em at Oregonian Blazers beat writer Jason Quick.
Here's the link to hang out in the chat room and I'll have a podcast of the audio shorty after we wrap tomorrow.
The closer we get to the season, the further away it feels with the building anticipation for October. Portland is itching for the start of arguably the most anticipated season the Blazers have had with the debuts of Greg Oden, Rudy Fernandez and Jerryd Bayless, not to mention the possibility of a return to the playoffs. And with all this anticipation comes expectations. John Schuhmann of NBA.com delves into the expectations for the Blazers.
The Trail Blazers held open auditions on Monday for a chance to sing before this season's games. Check out the video of all the participants from this year's tryouts.
Good stuff today from the members of the Blazers media. First off, Mike Barrett with a strong update:
So, given the circumstances it can be seen as good news in that a) it wasn't Greg Oden, and b) it was caught early enough that Frye shouldn't miss much of the regular season. And, being you have to simply accept these things and move on, this should be seen as an opportunity for another Trail Blazer- Ike Diogu.
Gold medalist, NBA Champion and Finals MVP Dwyane Wade is impressed with the new Blazer, in a recent Q&A with ESPN the Magazine (via TrueHoop):
Who is the most talented international player you played against this summer that's not already in the league? The new guy from Spain that went to Portland--Rudy Fernandez--he's an unbelievable talent. The way he shoots the ball and how athletic he is, I'm sure Nate McMillan didn't want him to play like that against us, but I'm sure he was smiling on the inside.
The surgery news came across late last night (10pm) but the dedicated blogger that he is, Channing Frye already has a little blurb on it:
Yesterday, I had my first surgery, other than my eyeballs earlier this summer. In a short period of time the Blazers staff helped me to identify the problem and quickly schedule surgery to allow time for healing and rehab, in order to get back out on the court.
Though no one ever wants surgery, I feel better for having taken care of the ankle before the season got started. I want to thank the fans, especially the BLAZER FANS for their continued support.
Greg Oden, Brandon Roy and Martell Webster will be holding a basketball camp this weekend, expertly instructing those who choose to be instructed. It's at the Hoop in Beaverton (I used to hoop there myself in high school, good digs). But the best part of all this is that Topps has a few new cards out featuring the Blazers above (I didn't even know Topps still made trading cards), and the Martell Webster card below is money. If I was still stockpiling cards like I did in the 80s, this one would have the plastic cover around it.
Saw this last night on KGW's Sports Sunday, Greg Oden singing some Britney Spears *NSync karaoke at a mentoring event over the weekend.
Scary.
He's an Olympic assistant coach that helped Team USA regain its standing as the best in the world (an invaluable experience). He's the best coach out of a timeout. And now, Charley Rosen calls Blazers head coach Nate McMillan one of the best in the profession, along with names like Zen Master, long-time Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, and Rick Adelman:
By virtue of his dignity, his honesty, his insistence on team play with an emphasis on defense, his talent for developing young players, and his ability to make both in-game and between-game adjustments, McMillan is not-so quietly building a potential dynasty in Portland. In fact, McMillan is destined to become THE outstanding coach of his generation.
The NBA held its 2008 NBA Rookie Transition Program today in New York. And we get a sweet look at Rudy Fernandez donning a red Blazers uniform for the first time. Unless his arm is covering up another number, it looks like Rudy will be sporting No. 5.
Nice find by emailer Chad.
Happy second day of September, Blazers fans. I hope everyone else is as geeked as I am about the return of college football. Now on to some early morning links.
More Travis Outlaw goodness from Jason Quick. Here's McMillan on TO:
"But when he penetrates now, he penetrates to get shot, he doesn't penetrate to take advantage of the defense. Play that ugly game because you have a weapon most people don't. Kobe plays an ugly game ... you play him too tight he will get to free throw line. If Travis learns to do that, there is no way of guarding him. Guys right now play him for the jump shot and he plays for the jump shot, as opposed to playing the game. Once you learn to play the game, we are going to win - we are going to win more - because there is no way of guarding him.''
Kelly Dwyer of Ball Don't Lie weighs in on Outlaw:
I've neglected the blog a little bit this week (thank you hs football, we've got some great coverage if you're interested), so I rounded up a few links from this week:
I'm sure by now you read The Jason Quick's piece on Rudy, Nate McMillan and the Olympics:
"I'm sitting there (in the gold medal game) with a straight face, trying not to smile," McMillan said. " (Spain) are the guys we have to beat, but I'm caught. That's my player and I want to (he claps his hands twice) but I gotta (he makes a serious face) because we are going up against him."
The four-letter network is doing some forecasting for each conference, placing the Blazers No. 8:
Oden, Oden, Oden. That's the story in Portland, where the rookie big man is working out to rave reviews after his microfracture recovery. With Brandon Roy leading a young, exciting team and Jerryd Bayless setting the summer league afire, expectations are through the roof in Blazerland
I figure 6th. (thanks to Ryan for the link)
Henry Abbott ponders the future of Team USA, with a few familiar faces (Greg Oden, Brandon Roy). That's what I call a recipe for gold. (thanks to Marcus for the link)
The Trail Blazers invite fans to help remember and celebrate the life of Kevin Duckworth. Here's the release from the Blazers:
