Collections

The Illinois State Geological Survey is the legislatively mandated repository for all drilling records and drill-hole samples in the State of Illinois. The Geological Records Unit (GRU) collections include records for more than 500,000 oil and gas wells, water wells, engineering borings, and miscellaneous test holes drilled in Illinois. The Geological Samples Library contains approximately 70,000 sets of well-cuttings and over 15,000 rock cores. Many regions of the state lack outcrops and road and stream cuts due to relatively flat topography. Drill hole records and samples provide the geologic data needed for environmental assessments, mineral resource evaluations, engineering studies, and groundwater resource evaluation and protection.
