Joel Salatin to keynote the Sustainable Farming
Association of Minnesota’s 18th Annual Conference

NORTHFIELD, Minn.  – The Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota (SFA), a grassroots, non-profit organization that supports sustainable farming, is proud to announce that grass-farmer, author and lecturer Joel Salatin will be the keynote speaker at its 18th Annual Conference.

The conference is on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN.  Salatin will close the event with his keynote address, “Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal,” followed by a question and answer session and reception.

Joel Salatin is a self-described “Christian-libertarian-environmentalist-lunatic farmer.”  His family’s Polyface Farm in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley is a multi-generational, pasture-based and “beyond organic” enterprise.  At Polyface, Salatin’s family follows the guiding principles of transparency, grass-based agriculture, individuality, valuing community, following nature’s template, and embracing earthworms.  By stacking enterprises, they build soil and produce “Salad Bar Beef,” “Pigaerator Pork,” pastured poultry yielding eggs, broilers, and turkeys, forage-based rabbits, forestry products, and profits.  They market and sell products locally.  In addition to creating and growing, they focus on healing – the food, land, economy, and culture.

Salatin is widely known throughout the alternative and sustainable farming world for his books and lectures promoting ecologically friendly and economically viable farming strategies and methods. Some of his writings include: You Can Farm, Salad Bar Beef, Pastured Poultry Profit$, and Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal.  He gained national fame after he was featured in Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma.  For more information on Salatin and Polyface Farm, visit www.polyfacefarms.com.
