Land Resource Regions and Major Land Resource Areas of Alaska

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is currently revising Agriculture Handbook 296 Land Resource Regions and Major Land Resource Areas of the United States (USDA 1981).  This publication represents the ecological land classification system used by the NRCS in carrying out its various programs.

The Alaska portion of the revision is completed and approved.  The updated map and descriptions for Alaska represent a new, mostly original, classification.  Development of this product relied on available resource publications including ecological classification products used by other agencies, as well as considerable field data and experience.

NRCS in Alaska is now releasing Land Resource Regions and Major Land Resource Areas of Alaska for use.  It will be incorporated into the revised Agricultural Handbook 296 for the entire United States, once that publication is completed.
