CSP Announced in Anchorage Watershed

April 4, 2008 (Anchorage AK) - The Anchorage Watershed, which lies between the Chugach Mountain Range and Cook Inlet, was one out of only 51 watersheds selected nationwide for the 2008 Conservation Security Program (CSP). The CSP program financially rewards good lands stewards who advance the conservation and improvement of natural resources on private and tribal lands used for agricultural production.

CSP program represents a new direction in federally-sponsored private land conservation; the program was modeled after "green payments" pioneered in Europe where landowners receive financial payments for doing good. Anchorage is the third watershed in Alaska to be eligible for participation in CSP, and to date six landowners on the Kenai Peninsula are enrolled in the program.

Sign-up will take place at the Anchorage NRCS office from April 18 to May 16. Interested landowners should first complete an Initial Questionnaire to determine their eligibility. The Initial Questionnaire and additional information about participation can be found at www.ak.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/CSP.html or by calling the NRCS Anchorage field office at 907-281-2424 ext. 100.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service puts nearly 70 years of experience to work in assisting people to conserve, maintain, and improve our natural resources and environment. NRCS works in partnership with local conservation districts serves almost every county in the nation, and the Caribbean and Pacific Basin. Participation in NRCS programs is voluntary.
